Morocco itinerary 7 days: 3 realistic circuits without spending your life in a car
Imperial cities by train, Marrakech and the Atlantic, or Atlas and desert: three routes built according to real distances and the rhythm of the journey.
Three realistic itineraries to visit Morocco in 7 days: imperial cities by train, Atlantic coast or southern Morocco, with stages and transport.

A 7-day Morocco itinerary should not attempt to connect fifteen cities, the Rif, the Sahara and the Atlantic. The country is vast, the terrain slows down journeys and a medina requires more than an hour between two transfers. The ONMT itself offers a seven-day tour around the imperial cities. We present three coherent variants: a rail route for a first visit, a slower stay between Marrakech and the Atlantic, and a road loop towards the South.
Tour 1: Imperial Cities by Train, Day by Day
This circuit favors Casablanca, Rabat, Fez and Marrakech. The ONCF connects these cities by conventional train; Al Boraq serves Tangier, Kenitra, Rabat and Casablanca. Always check the day's schedule on ONCF Voyages, as programs may change depending on the period.
Day 1 — Casablanca, arrival and departure
After arrival, limit the program. Depending on the time, discover the exterior of the Hassan II mosque and the corniche, or rest near a useful station for departure the next day. A late arrival does not justify an immediate long drive to another region.
Day 2 — Rabat, capital facing the Atlantic
Join Rabat and bring together the Hassan Tower, the Mohammed V mausoleum and the medina. If time permits, add the Oudayas kasbah or the Chellah. The city combines historical heritage and modern urban planning; its whole is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.

Days 3 and 4 — Fez, two days for the medina
Fez el-Bali is a living historical city and not a setting. Enter via a clear landmark like Bab Boujloud, explore the artisanal axes, the Bou Inania madrassah, the fondouks and the surroundings of Al-Quaraouiyine according to authorized access. A second day allows you to add Jnan Sbil, Fez el-Jdid or an excursion to Volubilis and Meknes without sacrificing the entire medina.
Day 5 — Train to Marrakech and first evening
The journey between Fez and Marrakech takes up a significant part of the day. Bring water and leave a margin before any evening reservations. On arrival, settle in and then discover Jemaa el-Fna and Koutoubia without hastily adding a large monument.
Days 6 and 7 — Marrakech by neighborhoods
Spend a day in the heart of the medina: Jemaa el-Fna, souks, Ben Youssef and a palace. The second can bring together the Kasbah, the Saadian tombs, Majorelle or Guéliz. If your flight departs on the seventh day, reduce the schedule and plan the airport transfer separately.

Circuit 2: Marrakech, Atlas and Essaouira
- Days 1 to 3: Marrakech, with medina, palaces, gardens and free time.
- Day 4: Ourika valley, Imlil or another stage of the Atlas chosen according to the weather and the condition of the roads.
- Days 5 and 6: Essaouira, its port, its ramparts, its medina and the Atlantic.
- Day 7: return to Marrakech or departure from an airport suitable for your reservation.
This variant limits hotel changes and is suitable for travelers who want to combine urban heritage, mountains and ocean. She does not understand Merzouga: replacing the Sahara with Agafay in an advertisement would be misleading, because Agafay is a stony desert close to Marrakech.
Circuit 3: Atlas, Aït Benhaddou and desert
A loop towards Ouarzazate, Aït Benhaddou, the Dadès or Todgha valleys and Merzouga requires several long road stages. Reserve it for travelers who accept the road and prefer landscapes to urban visits. Keep two nights in the desert region when possible, check the weather and avoid scheduling the return to Marrakech right before an international flight.
Train, car or driver: how to choose
- Train: best choice between Tangier, Kenitra, Rabat, Casablanca, Fez, Meknes and Marrakech depending on the services.
- Car: useful for the valleys, the Atlas and the South, but plan for parking and navigation outside the medinas.
- Coach: relevant for several cities without stations, by comparing official companies and stations.
- Driver or transfer: simplifies a rural loop, provided you confirm in writing stages, vehicle, accommodation and inclusions.
Budget: calculate without inventing a universal price
Costs vary depending on season, city, accommodation level and booking date. Build four envelopes: nights, intercity transportation, meals, visits. Add airport transfers and a margin for unforeseen circumstances. Only compare prices dated on the official sites or the written conditions of the service provider; a viral fare without a date is not a budget.
Adapt the week to the season
In the spring and fall, multi-region tours are generally easier to balance. In summer, favor the coast or very early morning visits to inland towns. In winter, check the cold and snow in the Atlas as well as road conditions. An official weather alert should always take precedence over the planned route.
Checklist before booking
- Choose a single main geographic axis.
- Check arriving and departing flights before hotels.
- Check ONCF timetables on the official channel.
- Stay at least two nights in major cities.
- Avoid a long drive on the day of the return flight.
- Download tickets, maps and addresses offline.
- Check official notices, weather and access to sites.
In seven days, the best tour is the one that transforms the distances removed into time actually experienced on site.
FAQ
What is the best itinerary in Morocco for 7 days?
For a first visit without a car, the Casablanca–Rabat–Fez–Marrakech axis is the easiest thanks to the train. If you prefer to slow down, combine Marrakech, Essaouira and a single stop in the Atlas.
Can you see Marrakech, Fez and the desert in one week?
It is possible with a lot of road, but not very comfortable. To enjoy the places, choose either the imperial cities or Marrakech and the South. The Merzouga Desert should not be presented as a quick excursion from Marrakech.
Should you rent a car to visit Morocco in 7 days?
No for Casablanca, Rabat, Fez and Marrakech, which are connected by rail. A car or transfer becomes useful for the Atlas, the valleys, Aït Benhaddou and Merzouga.
Where to start and end the circuit?
An open itinerary, arriving in one city and departing from another, often avoids an unnecessary return. However, compare flights, train times and rental conditions before booking.
How many cities to visit in one week in Morocco?
Three bases, possibly four if they are well connected, are generally sufficient. Multiplying the steps reduces the time available in the medinas and increases the risk of delay.
